How to get a work permit with a student visa
Don’t worry, the process to apply for the permit is easier than it seems. Below we explain what you need to do to work in Japan as a student.
*With a student visa, you can work up to 28 hours per week, and up to 40 hours during school holidays
You must fill it out by hand with your information before boarding the flight to Japan, preferably in English or Japanese.
Hand the form together with your passport to the Immigration officer.
Keep in mind that they will not ask you for the form, so if you forget to submit it, you will need to go to Immigration later to apply for the work permit, and this process will take approximately one month.
After showing your passport and submitting the form, you will receive your residence card. The first thing you should check is whether there is a stamp on the back with the following phrase in Japanese:
許可(原則週28時間以内・風俗営業等の従事を除く)
(Kyoka (gensoku shū 28 jikan inai・fūzoku eigyō-tō no jūji o nozoku)
Translation: Permission (In principle, up to 28 hours per week; for all types of work excluding businesses related to adult entertainment).
